Best Cybersecurity Certifications in 2026
June 15, 2001 · by Pentevo
Certifications won't replace skills, but they open doors — they're how hiring managers filter résumés and how you prove you've covered the fundamentals. Here are the ones that carry weight in 2026, grouped by where you are.
Entry level (start here)
- CompTIA Security+ — the classic first cert. Broad foundation across security concepts; widely recognized by employers and HR filters.
- CompTIA Network+ / A+ — worth it if your networking or IT basics are shaky.
- (ISC)² CC (Certified in Cybersecurity) — a free-to-study entry credential.
Ethical hacking & pentesting
- CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) — broad coverage of attacker tools and methodology; common in job descriptions, especially government/enterprise.
- PenTest+ — CompTIA's hands-on pentesting cert.
- OSCP (Offensive Security Certified Professional) — the respected, hands-on exam: you compromise machines in a lab. Hard, and highly valued by employers who want proof you can actually do the work.
Management & senior
- CISSP — the gold standard for security leadership/architecture (requires experience).
- CISM / CISA — governance, risk, and audit focused.
How to choose
Ask three questions:
- Where am I now? Beginner → Security+. Aspiring pentester → CEH/PenTest+ then OSCP.
- What do target jobs ask for? Read 10 real listings for your dream role and note the recurring certs.
- Theory or hands-on? CEH/Security+ test knowledge; OSCP tests skill. Most careers benefit from both.
Study smart
Certs reward understanding, not memorization. Build a home lab, practice on legal targets, and learn the why behind each technique. Our free Pentevo Academy covers 100% of the CEH syllabus with short videos and quizzes — a strong, no-cost way to prepare (we're an independent study resource, not affiliated with EC-Council).
