Cybersecurity Roadmap 2026: From Zero to Hired
May 27, 2001 · by Pentevo
"How do I get into cybersecurity?" gets a thousand conflicting answers. Here's a clear, ordered roadmap that actually works — no fluff.
Stage 1 — IT & networking foundations
You can't secure what you don't understand. Learn:
- Networking (TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP, ports) — consider Network+.
- Operating systems — Windows and Linux (Kali).
- How the web works.
Skipping this is the #1 cause of stalled careers.
Stage 2 — Security fundamentals
Learn the core concepts (the CIA triad, common attacks, defenses) and validate them with CompTIA Security+. This is your foundation cert.
Stage 3 — Pick a direction
Cybersecurity isn't one job. Choose a lane:
- Blue team (defense): SOC analyst, incident response, security engineering.
- Red team (offense): penetration testing, ethical hacking.
- GRC: governance, risk, compliance (great for non-coders).
- AppSec / Cloud: securing software and infrastructure.
Not sure? See Red Team vs Blue Team.
Stage 4 — Go deep + get hands-on
- For offense: learn the tools (Nmap, Burp Suite, Metasploit) and methodology, then pursue CEH → OSCP.
- For defense: learn SIEM, detection, IR, and log analysis (Wireshark).
- Practice legally — home labs, CTFs, vulnerable VMs.
Stage 5 — Build proof & get hired
- A portfolio (write-ups, GitHub, CTFs) beats certs alone.
- Apply for entry/adjacent roles (SOC, junior security, security-focused IT).
- Network in the community.
